The code base seems to use a pattern where an object named nil represents a default constructed (empty) return value. Since they changed the return type, they also had to change the error paths?

May be related to the return type that was changed to SBuf. I didn't check the code but assuming SBuf isn't typedeffed to a pointer or reference nil could be an SBuf singleton to denote NULL/nullptr.
