InfoSec is ~$127B industry, yet there’s no price tags on any vendor website. For some reason it’s easier to find out what a private plane costs than a ‘next-gen’ security product. Oh yah, and let’s not forget the lack of warranties.

Darn, I wish I had managed to catch you in Vegas and had a discussion on this. I think product warranties are a Very Bad Idea.

I'll bite, what's the key argument against warranties?

I'll admit to this notion tweeking my interest also. What are the issues with product warranties? 🙂

Warranties promise more than a product can deliver. As a child I had a bike with a lock that came with insurance in case the bike got stolen (FD: I was young. I never looked up the details). That's the kind of 'promise' I like.

I like that promise too, don't you think it means something if you can't make a similar promise?

I think a lot of products can and I'd love to see vendors cooperate with cyber insurance more.

My main issue with warranties is that they're often presented as some kind of bet. I'd like to present them as admission of imperfection: we won't stop everything, but if we do fail we cover the costs.

Hmm, if I buy a laptop with a 1 year warranty, the vendor is effectively betting that their product will not fail during the warranty period. I'm not sure what's wrong with that? It shows they have faith in their product, and will stand behind their claims.

Not sure I agree with the analogy here. A laptop doesn’t have the burden of possibly having the detect a specific type of malware, etc in an uncertain future. It’s a “canned” product that works reliably. question: how would someone provide assurance of infallibility for an AV?

There's not many industries that argue meeting the claims they make to consumers is too much of a burden for them.

My phrasing was off. I am just asking how a product (like an AV) can provide assurance of infallibility against a product like a laptop that has to function reliably against a set hardware spec.

I am genuinely interested in knowing this. Not to start an argument or anything. Seems like a very complex problem to solve in my eyes
