I agree, this scourge of http rpc endpoints are vendors trying to sidestep the NPAPI deprecation.... it was deprecated for a reason! 😬https://twitter.com/drewml/status/1148704362811801602 …

The @zoom_us vuln sucks, but it's definitely not new. This was/is a common approach used to sidestep the NPAPI deprecation in Chrome. Seems like a @taviso favorite: anti virus - https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=693 … logitech - https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=1663 … utorrent - https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/detail?id=1524 …

Deprecated, not replaced. This is what happens when we don't finish the job.

I don't think I've seen any convincing example for why NPAPI needs a replacement. Protocol handlers seem good enough to me, and I don't know if there is a better solution here for UX without sacrificing security?

These interfaces are dropped not because they're bad, but because things written to them are rotten. We can't patch the old stuff but we can shut down the vector. Problem is that we aren't always creating a path for new, actively maintained code to continue working safely.

It's going to work one way or another, because we aren't the only field that has tire fires to extinguish.

What is the prevailing opinion on that matter today? For myself, I believe as far as capability for persistent changes or communication to the machine, the browser should be stuck in its own sandbox save for the ability to downloaded files to a download directory.

Yeah, Windows tried that approach with universal apps, turns out sandboxes have ... issues
