Speaking in a personal capacity here: My problem with third-party AV is that, to satisfy some marketing checkbox, they are always mucking around with the behaviour of other legitimate programs.

It's not all just a "marketing checkbox". AV vendors like Kaspersky, Symantec and Avast block a lot of malware infections via behavioral-based prevention technologies. Some vendors might jump onto the "marketing" hype and do an even worse job, not all AV vendors are identical.
