one of the first vulnerabilities i found was fixed exactly 90 days after i reported it although, to be fair, that was mostly a coincidence, since there was already a major software update scheduled to be released that day

i see nothing wrong with your approach. microsoft was blessed with a free 90-day notice instead of a sudden eruption of massive ddos attacks worldwide. they knew the risk and made a conscious decision. that's on them now.
