There was no browser extension involved in the second link above. As far as I know, 1Password is similarly designed, relying on websockets for security. If you're concerned about malware, you should use application whitelisting - no password manager design will save you.

Just an update. 1Password no longer relies on websockets; we use various forms of native messaging instead. We still have to worry about threats to IPC (a hard problem), but this is a substantial improvement that took years of work.

I wasn't suggesting 1Password is somehow secure, just that it isn't inherently a browser extension. The most surprising thing about the second link is learning trend micro still exists.
