Just because something can happen, doesn't mean it did happen. It is certainly possible that a billion dollar secret government spy program could backdoor a motherboard, but I don't think it did.

Sure, I do agree with that. But there is the awkwardness that the circled component in the Bloomberg article is actually right next to BMC SPI Flash pin that needs to be flipped. Could of course be an informed guess. But it makes you go

They interviewed people who knew what they were talking about, e.g. listen to this interview https://risky.biz/RB517_feature/ . Essentially he would describe a theoretical hack to the reporters, then they would come back and say "oh yeah, that's what they did".
