1. Breach disclosed on a Friday. 2. The data about 500m people DOES NOT belong to their guests, but to Marriott. They have every right to allow it be compromised. 3. Breach unlikely to be costly, and affect stock price. 4. Other hotel chains should consider incident response.https://twitter.com/MarriottIntl/status/1068460980621971456 …

I've started buying stock after every breach announcement (seriously).

No, just observed that the stock market doesn't care about data breaches or disclosed vulnerabilities; there's a temporary reaction followed by quick recovery.

I do think there are viable strategies for shorting with vulnerability research though, it's an interesting discussion topic.

That's what muddy waters tried to do with abbott/st jude. Didnt work out well long term but certainly potential for a quick trade as long as the information is truthful.

Not really the same, they disclosed the vulnerabilities. I think you can't disclose them if you want to take a short position, because the stock market doesn't care about disclosed vulnerabilities. I have thoughts on how to make it work though, it's a fun discussion

No I believe they shorted first, then disclosed the vulnerability, then converted the short. Or rather the third party hedge fund did the actual trading

Doesn't make any difference, disclosure means the stock market doesn't care very much.

We are talking past each other. In this chart on aug 25th, muddy waters released a report they paid for on vulnerabilities in st jude medial devices. they shorted before the report came out, and could have covered for a quick 10% gain after the announcement afterpic.twitter.com/lUzbBAKMyM

I know what they did and what happened, and the order of events. I'm saying I don't think disclosure is the optimal way to profit from vulnerability research.
