I do care a lot about how are them sold, as AV marketing campaigns have always been a damn cancer for information security.

Sure, but that's an entirely separate discussion.

Yes. We're talking about whether average home users on most OS's should use AV for what it does in practice. Not whether implicit or explicit marketing claims are correct.

You can't do that Martijn. When you tell users "keep paying us and you can click whatever you like" you've made the problem worse. A (wise) cynic might say you're exacerbating the problem because you're scared the revenue stream might dry up.

Can we just leave money out of it and assume I say the things I say because I believe them, not because I have some kind of interest? You may still disagree, but it keeps the discussion sane.

I'm saying "you" as in the "antivirus industry", not you personally. You are a representative of that industry, no?

Not sure. I try not to be that. When I have discussions with AV companies, I'm usually the one who relays the arguments your and others are making and that they should fix their stuff.

I mean, we're having this discussion because you're quoted in an article recommending people pay extra for more antivirus?

Again, that may have been a misquote. (
@spgedwards was saying that though.) I just said the average user should use some kind of AV and explicitly told@lorenzofb I didn't want to comment on whether Defender was good enough.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
OK, fair enough. Sorry, I missed the last reply about that. /cc @lorenzofb the wording of the article is misleading (at least, I was confused and thought it was Martijn was saying that).
