Having seen just how badly some (most) password managers are secured, the risk is bound to increase when the bad guys realize how much more data they can extract through password manager vulnerabilities. I guess that they simply aren't bothering because phishing works so well.

I don't know why you think I would argue phishing or password breaches are less common than password manager exploitation, that's absurd. They *are* attack surface, and you should choose a safe one.
