As chief justice of online, I now declare it illegal for any man to write about incels unless it is to unpack, reflect and condemn toxic masculinity, male entitlement & the myriad interconnected ways society perpetuates much of these horrific beliefs.

To anchor discussions about the incel community in terms of "access" to "sex" means starting off with their dogma rather than concluding why their dogma is wrong, horrific, sexist nonsense.

But that means confronting problems (cis het) men have as a whole, not merely the more dangerous, toxic & horrific part of our gender. Creepy economists thought experimenting with "access to sex" like it's a resource, not something involving women's consent, should grab a mirror.

If you begin your focus on incels with discussions about sex, you've handed them legitimacy. Don't anchor this about sex. They can call themselves "celibate" but the reality is they're angry at being told no in various ways, about various issues - directly & indirectly.

This is also not a Young Internet Man thing; this is another manifestation from centuries of patriarchy and sexist values, taught by fathers to sons, media to male viewers, the worldview of white male supremacy in art, law, politics around the world that's dominated for so long.

It's comforting to view this as a new species of rot rather than a vine from the poisoned roots of our gender because it would mean men actually digging into ourselves, into our privilege, to see flashes of familiarity in the views held up by these "fringe" male elements.

It's easy to condemn and mock incels; let me know when you're calling out your male friends, your male family members, giving up listening only to male musicians, only male authors, when you stop having only male friends. This toxicity doesn't emerge ex nihilo.

If you don't see a direct link between incel garbage and the normalisation of male entitlement, I need only indicate how "friendzone" & "persistence/wearing her down" are still things, still tropes so much media uses & shrugs at (and it's always a male "victim")

Some time ago for the @guardian, I wrote about some aspects of how we've camouflaged creepy entitlement under the banner of "romance" in many storieshttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/12/stalking-men-rejection-romantic-sitcoms-films-creepy-women-boundaries …

Also please don't ignore the voices of sex workers who are being used as depersonsalised distributors of sex to "solve" incel issues, as if sex workers are not peoplehttps://twitter.com/TrancewithMe/status/990019964940664832 …

Also just a general reminder of a couple of things regarding incels/MRAs/PUA etc 1. Don't suggest they see a sex worker They HATE us. And we (most sex workers) don't talk about them because many of us (to my awareness) have had to deal with their violent targeted harassment.

If what incels wanted was sex, they might, for instance, value sex workers and wish to legalize sex work. But incels, being violent misogynists, often express extreme disgust at the idea of “whores.” http://nyer.cm/qzMNoEo  pic.twitter.com/VFdR40obJ9
