I’ve mostly gone back to reading sci-fi nowadays. I suspect this is because sci-fi is about competent people, whereas literary fiction is about neurotic people.

The Culture series by Iain Banks is pretty literary, though the neurotics tend to be ships or stellar field-liners

+1 on Banks - I like his non-SF books too (esp "The Bridge" and "The Business"). First Culture book I read was "The Player of Games". Thought it was a good entry point but I know this is a debated topic.
