“Our store is not for sale—that’s not how we handle things,” said Schiller. But here’s some App Store ads for you! http://www.loopinsight.com/2016/06/08/phil-schiller-apple-making-major-changes-to-the-app-store …

“Twitter clients like Tweetbot … can instead charge an annual/monthly/etc. subscription fee.” But will people pay?http://daringfireball.net/2016/06/the_new_app_store …

I’d probably be fine with a subscription model, if they degraded nicely. Stop paying, app still works but no more upgrades. That seems fair.

Apple changed the software mindset from pay a lot every year, to pay a little once, to never “pay”. I do hope they can move the needle back.

Google copies Apple again. Maybe we’ll get lucky and see a race to the bottom in App Store revenue sharing pricing.http://www.recode.net/2016/6/8/11889298/google-apple-subscription-app-revenue-share …

I wonder, is Apple doing subscription instead of paid upgrades because that’s best for users/devs or because of the creaky iTC backend?

@tapbot_paul you nailed it. Their tech debt is leading them to all sorts of bad decisions

@dwlz @tapbot_paul Then again, I’ve been saying that since like iOS 5. Completely baffled how Apple has managed this long.

@drbarnard @dwlz @tapbot_paul Gotta admit, props to Phil Schiller. Appears to be swift changes, no reason to doubt him yet.

@tapbot_paul seems like that’s going to be up to developers? core works, most features require ongoing subscription

          0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
        2. Paul Haddad ‏@tapbot_paul Jun 8

@nathanperetic that’s not quite the same since features you were getting would stop working.

          0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
        3. Nathan ‏@nathanperetic Jun 8

@tapbot_paul definitely not the same. I guess I meant, close enough?

@tapbot_paul I think I'd almost prefer a monthly fee? Probably not wider market though...

@ow I’m guessing people are less likely to do a subscription than pay once, but both those numbers are tiny anyways.

@tapbot_paul Is that not how it works? Or does it just stop working?

@amdev no clue how Apple’s works. I think most regular ones things just stop working.

        1. Robert Gaugl ‏@robs89 Jun 8

@tapbot_paul Then you only subscribe for 1 month to get a feature update and unsubscribe right after.

          0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
        2. Paul Haddad ‏@tapbot_paul Jun 8

@robs89 developers can make subscription 3/6/12 months long to prevent that.

@tapbot_paul and if update wanted pay subscription then stop again?

          @amazinarreckk sure why not.

@tapbot_paul that’s fair. But I’d rather pay for a major update than a subscription when the app has very few updates.
