I wonder how many iOS devs would leave the AppStore if it was a practical choice.http://sixcolors.com/post/2014/10/bbedit-at-max-q/ …

@tapbot_paul I think most devs would stay for marketing. iOS users go to the store for discovery. Mac users only visit for system updates.

@sandofsky almost certainly but would be nice to have a choice.

@tapbot_paul Totally. The current system with Gatekeeper is a great compromise, and better for users…

@tapbot_paul …but I don't see Apple budging on iOS, just because of their 30% cut.

@sandofsky @tapbot_paul plus we users demand security.

@westy2018 @tapbot_paul If developer signing is required, it's just as secure. The App Store review process is a security joke.

@sandofsky @tapbot_paul the App Store security is better than developer signing. I’ll take that any day. I have purchased over 1700 iOS apps

@tapbot_paul by practical do you mean possible?

@tapbot_paul we'd all like to, but none of us would. Android allows you to distribute apps on your own, pretty much nobody does

@rustyshelf @tapbot_paul Palm Catalog nailed it, imo. Was a great mix of curation and immediate updates and distribution via URLs.

@marcedwards @tapbot_paul personally I love Google Play. 1 hour from submit to distribution, beta support, enable 10% of users, etc.

@tapbot_paul BBEdit is a ancient app struggling to keep up with moderns times and they complain about how hard life in appstore is. Said it.

@BDoma No complaints. We thought it would be valuable to discuss our decision-making process.

@bbedit I think if you modernized, and dev were on latest features you'd find the AppStore valuable.

@tapbot_paul on the other hand, curation has its benefits, look at what a disaster Google Play has become.

@tapbot_paul depends on how you define "would leave", if it were an either/or, probably not. If I could have an additional store, maybe.

@tapbot_paul I wouldn't. It's challenging at times. But I personally like shopping there, and I want to provide that experience to my users.

@tapbot_paul I don't want to deal with file download hosting or payment processing. MAS & AppStore are fine with me.

@tapbot_paul his frustrations (for me) are just as valid on iOS. I know I’d have some apps off the store if it were officially feasible.
