@taosecurity I'd dispute that. Network IDS evolved from network guys wanting to find interesting stuff rather than security theory.
Have you read any of these early computer security papers archived by NIST? http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/history/ … The Anderson work was the basis for IDS.

@ErrataRob Incidentally I didn't say NIDS. The Anderson papers are mainly about HIDS.@toddheberlein started NIDS with his NSM in late 80s.
