@taosecurity I'd dispute that. Network IDS evolved from network guys wanting to find interesting stuff rather than security theory.

@ErrataRob Incidentally I didn't say NIDS. The Anderson papers are mainly about HIDS.@toddheberlein started NIDS with his NSM in late 80s.
