Disagree: (1) misery is the deciding factor, not profit, (2) big diff between profit via fixing misery and profit via causing it
-

On (1), “profit” just refers to some sort of gain, doesn’t have to be monetary. (2) tweet refers to causing it. :)
-
*causing or sustaining

@stevedekorte Re (1): misery not deciding factor. Consider a Judge or Jury. Causes plenty of misery, not necessarily evil. -
I assumed we were talking about net misery and profit. If not, judges would meet you definition of evil.
-
It's about knowledge. I.e. knowingly causing harm to someone because it benefits you personally.
-
Judges who serve out sentences not because it's justice, but b/c it benefits them personally, those are evil.

@Awyee707 @Namestream You're going to need to unpack that because I don't see that. I think improvement can be made in that area tho. :) -

@Awyee707 @Namestream These are usually voluntary exchanges, so the quote does not apply to them (unless there’s exploitation involved). -
@Awyee707 @Namestream In exchange for money, someone receives something in return. Totally OK. -
@Rodomonte@Awyee707 @Namestream Interesting, thanks for sharing! -

@taoeffect So a window fitter fixing your window is evil? A doctor making that necessary surgery is evil? Should they rather work for free? -
@cryptoons Of course not, that's a misunderstanding of the statement. Statement refers to institutions that create or sustain suffering. -
@cryptoons For example, any companies or doctors that treat people when they could be healing them instead are evil. -
@taoeffect Don't blame companies, blame govt regulations that enable bad players while disabling good competition (thru insane regulation) -
@cryptoons Companies and governments share the blame. If you think there's much difference between the two, you're in for a shock.
-
@taoeffect Aren't you mistaking companies (firms) with corporations (govt created legal entities) ? The first CAN exist without govt. -
@cryptoons Can you show me a country with companies and no government? -
@taoeffect Ofcourse govt is all around us, much like ALL lifeforms have forms of cancer, but govt existence is NOT essential for free trade. - 4 more replies
