  5. 504. MAVEN was also able to snap a view of Comet Siding Spring, this time in UV. The blue here represents sunlight being scattered by a cloud of hydrogen surrounding the comet's nucleus.

  6. 503. The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured some views of Comet Siding Spring in near-infrared. It may not look like much, but it's still pretty cool that we can do this!

  7. 502. The Opportunity rover managed to image Comet Siding Spring as it flew past Mars too! I love this particular view because I can imagine standing on the surface next to Oppy, staring up at the sky. 🧡

  8. 501. When Comet Siding Spring flew past Mars in 2014, many spacecraft there managed to snap photographs of it! Here's some views from the HiRISE camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, ~150,000 km away from the comet. (Earlier threads: )

  14. 500. In order to protect all of their satellites orbiting Mars from dust/debris during the Comet Siding Spring flyby, NASA moved all the active sats "behind" Mars as a shield.

  15. 499. Comet Siding Spring's close pass by Mars—less than 1/2 the distance between Earth & Moon—left behind a temporary ion layer in Mars' atmosphere from its dust! The two radar instruments in orbit, MARSIS and SHARAD, were both able to detect these effects.

  16. 498. Comet Siding Spring flew past Mars back in 2014, and MAVEN was able to capture the effects on Mars' atmosphere. The comet left dust behind in its wake, which MAVEN was able to detect—might've caused martian meteor showers! (These are pics of the comet from Hubble.)

  17. 497. MAVEN also found that the rate at which Mars' atmosphere is stripped away by the solar wind can increase >10x during solar storms!

  18. 496. MAVEN's measurements have supported the hypothesis (based on models + observations of features on the surface like ancient channels) that Mars' atmosphere was once much thicker and more Earth-like in its past, but has slowly been stripped away by the solar wind.

  19. 495. MAVEN was able to measure the rate at which Mars' atmosphere is being stripped away by the solar wind: 100 grams of gas every second! This is because it no longer has a magnetic field to protect it, unlike Earth.
