A NY lawmaker said that allowing voting from prison is "insulting" to law enforcement. So I reached out to prosecutors & DOCs in Maine & Vermont, which enable prison voting, to ask about that. And received some powerful replies. Check it out! And thread.

A good example of how it's hard to enforce this idea only 'state delegate equivalent' result counts: If those were results, would EW exclusively be covered as finishing 3rd place bc "540 > 510" (and this in a party that spent 3 years traumatized by the popular vote/EC split)?

catching up on tonight's 2 New Hampshire polls, via Franklin Pierce University (for the Herald) & Emerson Sanders 31% & 29% Biden 24% & 14% Warren 17% & 12% Buttigieg 8% & 13% [Note Sanders is only one above 15% statewide threshold in Emerson's; but not at all in Herald's.]

I guess it's too much to ask for headlines about the families who don't have to go on public assistance because their bread winner was able to keep working and paying taxes instead of rotting on Riker's.

Also: up until 2020, NY had weak rules on speedy trials AND on discovery [=it did not enable defense to get access to info or evidence, which it may want to question, until shortly before trial]. How can you defend keeping ppl "in jail almost a year" pretrial in such conditions?

a federal judge wrote in 2019: "Justifying pre-emptive incarceration of thousands not yet convicted because some fraction of them would commit an offense is... "an argument for incarcerating every arrestee and defendant until trial or other disposition.”

"in jail for almost a year," ie. while presumed innocent, without a trial or conviction for that long, & without Legal Aid getting to defend him or examine evidence. (while someone wealthy could have paid bail & walked out anyway under old system without such press coverage)

76% of Texas's DA races this year drew only one candidate. (And 86% of county attorney elections!) I've been committed to figuring out the degree to which DA elections aren't contested—and with every filing deadline that passes there's more of this.

Value of any "voting on electability or principle" question is limited by many of us thinking the person we most agree with is also likeliest to win. So I'm unscientifically curious, is the candidate you find most compelling similar as your judgment of the most electable?

Some fireworks in Harris County (Houston). For context on what those "changes" are, there are indeed major contrasts between the incumbent DA & challengers — specifically on death penalty, cash bail, & whether to prosecute drug possession & sex work:

Emerson's poll finds Klobuchar as a sizable "2nd choice" preference (ahead among Buttigieg supporters, 2nd among Warren supporters), but not high enough to expect to reach viability ahead of them most places. (The converse is that ARG poll, which had her and Buttigieg flipped.)

Asking why Steyer or Bloomberg aren't spending money in Florida is the wrong question. Issue starts with how they have $450 million to spend so easily, while the scale of poverty & mass incarceration is such that Florida knows its poll tax will be so effective.
