Research has shown for every $1 invested in preventive services, $5-$12 in future spending is saved. Long term spending is reduced for justice, health care and addiction treatment.

I was so grateful for this mental frame "Blame is the discharge of discomfort" - Brene Brown. as I worked with a 'hot' group this week.

Twitter threads show different order depending on our settings & different on phone & computer (for me). PLEASE make easy to show ppl linked points in order. Order flips in initial view vs "display thread". anyone figure out how all can see intended order?

What is the evaluation profession's role in education about the use & misuse of performance metrics? Especially when said metrics appear tied to ideologically driven tunnel vision re the value of public services?

I am a Credentialed Evaluator of 30+ yrs experience, have worked in/with academia, gov't & community. I value outcomes & metrics for decision-making. But metrics have limits, can be poorly chosen, "gamed", & misused.

Impact of the increasing focus on sponsorship on areas that are less "commercializable" (arts, humanities - also could be impacted by the jobs/pay metrics)?

Proposed metric: "sponsored research revenue". What are conflict of interest risks? Impact on balance between basic vs applied research, grants vs contracts? Impact on researchers' ability to do important research that "sponsors" are not interested in funding?

Big picture: Why is post-secondary education treated like commodity, for getting job & making money short term? What about value of critical thinking & broader cognitive/social/citizenship skills to serve tomorrow's world, not just today's? (not just economies, but communities)

Big issue: What are the privacy issues & related ethical implications of tracking employment & income data about individuals?

Would someone who chooses part time work - perhaps combined with parenting &/or other caregiving roles - be counted as a success? What about someone who graduates & has kids shortly after & chooses to stay home? Lots of complexities using metrics influenced by so many factors.

Are jobs & income the only aims of post-secondary education? If someone who graduates in one field takes a job in another field at a lower income because of changes in economy, interests, life circumstances - would this person be counted as a success?

Advanced Ed site: "Your pathway is unique to you...You may start with a specific goal, only to find out partway through getting there that you want to explore something else" Post-grad career choices can also be non-linear. How do grad rate/income metrics address unique journeys?

What is within the post-secondary institutions' sphere of influence? (Post graduation employment & income - how much can institution be credited - or blamed -- for these indicators heavily influenced by economic conditions that influence hiring & /or pay?)

Good read by Relevant to Alberta Advanced Education announcement of move to more performance-based funding (up to 40% by 2023). Ontario is doing similar. Questions to ponder. (Thread follows)

Evaluators: A thought-provoking read by American historian ⁦⁩ goes through history/trends in metrics, whose interests they serve/do not, unintended consequences, & when/how to use metrics to inform decisions.

Hopeful note, after my last thread re post-secondary funding metrics: Event to foster critical thinking & broad exposure to lots of ideas. I attended part of Congress here in 2000 & look forward to more. Let's encourage our politicians of all levels/stripes to attend ;-)

The demographic data section of a survey should be called the “social constructs” section of the survey. Do you know how to use the ones you are collecting?
