i.e., the only (or at least, the main) reason anyone needs a psychology of aesthetics (or most other things) is because humans don't have the capacity to generate useful predictions on-the-fly from the raw data. that isn't a problem for statistical models.

personality is a great example of this. laypeople don't need models like the Big Five to talk about personality; they have much richer language for that. and for prediction, the Big Five is utterly useless. what's left? mostly psychologists talking to each other, AFAICT.
