This morning, a resolution recognizing the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment was introduced in the UN General Assembly. This Thursday, the UNGA will take the historic decision to recognize this right for the first time at a global level. 1/14

The Human Rights Council just recognized, for the first time, the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, by a vote of 43 for, 0 against, and 4 abstentions (China, India, Japan, Russia). The Council applauded the moment, as they should! A new chapter begins.

In 2018, my predecessor John Knox and I co-authored a report calling on the UN to recognize the right to a healthy environment. The Human Rights Council Resolution 48/13 last year was a key step. Now it is time for the General Assembly to adopt a similar resolution on this right!
