Countries of maghreb are leading the pack—particularly non-stereotype-conforming is Libya. Unfortunate there is no data for Syria or GCC but I expect them to have similar solid trends based on previous datasets.

% of non-religious in Lebanon/Iraq may in part be kept low as a function of how religion gets more conflated with identity & political affiliation in countries with heavy sectarian politics. Contrast this with Libya and Tunisia, countries that are 90+% (nominally) Sunni Muslim

Arabic questionnaire can be accessed here (and English translation elsewhere on the site) http://arabbarometer.org/ar/survey-data …

Reasons for this shift away from religion (read: Islam) in MENA come down to 3 imo: 1- Advent of Internet. It’s easier for many to find material debating/deconstructing religious beliefs. Also easier to connect with other non-religious/atheist ppl, de-stigmatizing the label.

2- ISIS backlash. Even tho ISIS used an extreme version of Islamic teachings, many were disillusioned by religion as a whole, fairly or not. 3- Arab Spring. Old frameworks of authority collapsed or been put under serious scrutiny: patriarchy, govs, & by extension religion.

Hmm I would be interested to know how this question was asked in Arabic? مش متدين? Also is the suggestion here that people no longer believe or are simply not practicing?

Yes, they asked about “متدين.” I don’t think there’s a better one word descriptor that captures “practicing” like in English, but they do go through a list of specific practices and rituals in a different question (praying, going to mosque etc)pic.twitter.com/z4EgPdWim0

I beg to differ. Many people boast about being religious متدينون, and wear it as a badge of honor, sometimes even when privately they are not.
