'Without exception, all positions are oriented toward the institutional apparatus. Marginality here is only relative and temporary: the moment black studies or women's studies or queer theory conceives of itself as a discipline, its primary orientation is toward the institution.'
'Any intellectual who holds a position is a function of this apparatus; his or her marginality is, for the most part, only an operational device.'
'Resistance, subversion, opposition, etc., stabilize quite as much as they destabilize. ... Any position is a state agency, and its relative marginality is a mode of orientation, not an exception. Effective resistance must be located in other tactical forms.'
Mann calls his method 'masocriticism', libidinal materialism laying waste to theory.
Very interesting! Is the libidinal perhaps from Lyotard as well or inflected theough Lib Econ, or is it more diffuse?
He doesn't relate it to Lyotard directly as far as I can tell, more an implication of his method. @lutlopl perhaps knows more.https://books.google.com.au/books?id=0MbyR7j5L5gC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false …
no Lyotard in the index & I don't remember any mentions, but his influence would've been floating around OR the bits that influenced Lyotard's ideas ... & the book is in the 'Postmodern Studies' series.
Thanks for the clarification! As I mentioned, I made a big assumption of a direct influence, but perhaps there is a confluence of indirect interests
