Agreed but I think he originally wrote this in English, which was, alas, not Hayek's first language.

Hey, wasn't trying to troll. In English, we have the neuter 'it', which doesn't distinguish antecedents. Hard to parse in our idiom.

I absolutely agree, somebody at the publisher should have corrected such an obvious grammatical mistake.

Nah it is ok. I got the jist, but I feel it could be clearer. German/French to English requires a bit of a hiatus and pause.

When translating French, I try to distinguish 'former' and 'latter' pronouns in various ways to make things clear.
