I agree with both. But it is a whole new world.Ever since Garland not receiving a hearing, the Republicans have been cheating. We need changehttps://twitter.com/KeithOlbermann/status/876870642427101191 …

Eric don't call that cheating. Not the proper word. It's a continual erosion of norms that exacerbates polarization to weaponize obstruction

Also, Garland was only the most consequential in a long line of obstruction of federal judges blockd by McConnell. Lot to do with blue slips

http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/05/republicans-are-laying-groundwork-their-normal-blue-slip-hypocrisy/ … this lays out a good baseline for the problem of just one of the ways Republican obstructionism is fucking heinous

Kevin left out the idea that is basically this: senators from the state of the appointed jusge can turn in a blue slip that approves them

So, Leahy was requiring both senators from appointed states to turn in approval

Republicans, hypocritically, moved to one slip and even 0 under Bush when they could. So, that streamlines approval of appointments

The thing is, without the slip-stage, nominees can be appointed to be voted on. Hence, Republicans could filibuster judges, preventing vote.
