In the old days Games were Games, single purchase products that you bought once + never changed Now Games are Services, continual products that have persistent long term support + sales In the future, Games will be Platforms, engines to drive user creativity + new ways to play

Games already were platforms, warcraft and starcraft engines spawned huge popular genres such as tower defence and MOBA, but attempts to recreate that with powerful custom game engines in both Dota 2 and SC2 have failed. What is lacking is the boredom of people to try new things

To an extent yes, but those were experiences created as modifications, not intended by the game creators. By bringing more tools for creativity into the game itself you encourage more people to experiment Players arent boring now. Just check out the wild creativity on YT/ Twitch

I didn't mean to say that the players are boring, I am saying it's hard for a creator to find an audience because there isn't a _bored_ audience. I.E when I was playing Starcraft custom games, often there were only 2-3 lobbys up, so I "had" to try out different weird games.

It's less hard in games that lean into it / support it, and a community builds up around the custom games. A classic example would be Halo, where custom games were so popular that the developers added in one as a "real" gamemode
