Huge thanks to the HMRC support staff who helped fix the ridiculous error, and remained friendly throughout. Less thanks to a system which charges £1,300 for a £2 underpayment, then threatens debt collectors in their first letter. Unconscionable.

I'm in a position where I know the system well enough to not worry, and even if I'd had to, I could have paid it without much trouble. Imagine someone already struggling receiving that letter, adding to their anxiety & putting more time & effort on them.

Read a book by an ex-IRS commissioner called Many Unhappy Returns - talked about how he tried to shift the attitudes of IRS tax collectors from thinking of taxpayers as the enemy, to taxpayers as customers. saved money + improved collection
