GTA V seems to be the game that folk buy with a PS4/XB1. Is that because the game is so good, or the generation has been disappointing?

This is already a better answer than 'It's GTA'. And suggests that actually, yes, current content providers aren't delivering
My main point was that the gameplay is indeed great, and there are no other games that give that same gameplay consistently with the same level of quality. GTA isn't about driving cars around a city, it's a Destiny-like MMO grind + a social minigame hub combined
