GTA V seems to be the game that folk buy with a PS4/XB1. Is that because the game is so good, or the generation has been disappointing?

So the reason a 4 year-old old-gen game is the defining title of this generation is ‘because it’s GTA’. Thanks for the cutting industry analysis Clavin ;-)

It's the only version of that type of gameplay available to players. It's consistently popular with content creators and on the playground. His answer was simple but correct - It's GTA. There is no game that substitute for that experience

I can think of about 20 games that are GTA-like. But irrespective, this hasn't happened on previous generations. I can't help but feel that the current gen content have failed to excite gamers on mass

There are no games that provide the same gameplay as GTA. An online semi-persistent physics sandbox where you can grind missions with friends to unlock structured content + rewards - part MMO, part physics toolbox, part minigame server, all driven by YouTube + Twitch content

This is already a better answer than 'It's GTA'. And suggests that actually, yes, current content providers aren't delivering

My main point was that the gameplay is indeed great, and there are no other games that give that same gameplay consistently with the same level of quality. GTA isn't about driving cars around a city, it's a Destiny-like MMO grind + a social minigame hub combined
