I'm wrestling with why it is that watching people play Doom makes me want it, whereas the trailers completely turned me off.

Upon rewatching, I think the Doom trailers take the material so incredibly seriously that the sense of fun doesn't come through.
yeah I definitely get that sense. not sure about a solution - it would have been hard to pitch but maybe a pacey staged 1 shot?
