The graffiti is part of the statue’s history now so it’s definitely worth preserving. Also miss me with that “he did some good things” bullshit, he enslaved roughly 80,000 people and was directly responsible for around 19,000 deaths
Worth adding that the statue was erected 170 years after Colston died by a Victorian businessman who specifically wanted to white-wash him and turn him into a mythical figure that would keep the local working class in-line with prudish Victorian values

Oh 100%. The memory of Colston was purposely manipulated in order to represent him as a philanthropist and it’s something which echoes across the whole heritage sector. Statues aren’t neutral and to view them as such is so disingenuous to those who see them as sites of truama
