The statue of Robert Milligan has stood uncomfortably outside the Museum of London Docklands for a long time, one of only three museums in the UK to address the history of the transatlantic slave trade. (thread)pic.twitter.com/GNAbmU5aPv

I have. And I was particularly struck by the idea of the curator as an individual and having long wanted the removal, the statue being outside and not owned by the museum but a clearly poignant part of the museums location and the now backing of the MoLD to seek it's removal...

An interesting historical project here would be to look at how LDDC and MoLD saw this and talked about it in the 90s. Looks a bit like there was an idea of 'balance' between different world-views. Has anyone worked on LDDC's cultural policy?

That's a good question. All I came across was a kind of basic historical summary of the cooperation of the LDDC and their drive to protect working history in the 80s and 90s in response to containerisation and the global. Footnote in my PhD haha. I can't remember the articles.

@tactful just posted a snippet of #LDDC announcing the statue's return to public display in 1997https://twitter.com/tactful/status/1270590822782832640 …

The @DailyMailUK front-page claims the Robert Milligan statue was removed after 200 years. This is a lie. It was held in storage for 50+ years, re-erected in 1997 by the London Docklands Development Corporation in an attempt to further gentrify the area Source: LDDC 1997 report pic.twitter.com/BUPPSDXUIX

I'm no historian or researcher, but the LDDC's history is surprisingly well documented. They have a website run by ex-members where they uploaded PDF scans of every annual report. They list members who could be contacted as sources. They're clearly very proud of that time + work

Good grief, they really have put quite a lot together, they've even published monographs of their history.
