The @DailyMailUK front-page claims the Robert Milligan statue was removed after 200 years. This is a lie. It was held in storage for 50+ years, re-erected in 1997 by the London Docklands Development Corporation in an attempt to further gentrify the area Source: LDDC 1997 reportpic.twitter.com/BUPPSDXUIX

Funnily enough, the LDDC bragged in its annual report about re-erecting the statue under a section titled "Diversity in the arts". It was a strategic decision to basically add more statues to the area because more statues = more art? more value? 🙄pic.twitter.com/1g2newRyxY

LDDC was setup in 1981 to 'regenerate' (gentrify) the Docklands area of London. It was decommissioned in 1998 and considered a huge "success" Here are all the Board + Executive Team members who in 1997 decided to pull a slave trader statue out of storage and pop it back up 🤔pic.twitter.com/Mo0XtnHNQf

Yes, all but 1 are white. An almost unanimously-white gentrification committee decided to pull a slave trader statue out of storage because it made the area they were gentrifying feel more 'artsy' or 'historic' But "statue removed after 23 years" doesn't make a good headline
