Claire Saffitz doesn't make 20k USD per Gourmet Makes video, that's ridiculous + there's no source. Her vids get 2-5M views. Even if we assume a ludicrously high CPM (say $10 per 1000 views) top vids make 5000 * 10 = $50,000 + YouTube takes 45% not including other workers / costs
I'm also not a big fan of attacking women for negotiating better pay. The takeaway from Claire going freelance shouldn't be "she gets paid too much per video" it should be "we need to raise up Sohla + other BIPOC so they are paid equally based on work"
Hawa getting paid $400 per video is bad based on the value of her work + experience - basically 1 full day plus travel plus prep in NYC. V Bad. But the vids got 500k views - 500 * $10 = $5000, minus 45% cut is $2750 to cover all the workers + costs. + $10CPM is probably too high
Of course there's probably other value e.g having the recipe on website + in the print magazine. BA need to immediately pay BIPOC people appropriately based on their contributions and backpay Sohla (and any others) for video features
