I flew to Australia to meet my father for the first time when I was 13. We traveled to New Zealand's North Island, driving from Auckland to Wellington, stopping off at Rotarua where he grew up. We visited the Marae his family grew up in. It was nice, but I felt like an outsider
I have pale white skin. I never faced any of the discrimination that Māori people face every day. They were the nicest people, but I think you need more than blood to belong somewhere. And it feels like appropriation to claim that identity, having never suffered because of it
New Zealand + Australia were beautiful though. If you can afford to, I recommend visiting at least once. Beautiful landscapes. The kindest, funniest people. Great grub. Would love to go back someday
