I flew to Australia to meet my father for the first time when I was 13. We traveled to New Zealand's North Island, driving from Auckland to Wellington, stopping off at Rotarua where he grew up. We visited the Marae his family grew up in. It was nice, but I felt like an outsider
I have pale white skin. I never faced any of the discrimination that Māori people face every day. They were the nicest people, but I think you need more than blood to belong somewhere. And it feels like appropriation to claim that identity, having never suffered because of it
New Zealand + Australia were beautiful though. If you can afford to, I recommend visiting at least once. Beautiful landscapes. The kindest, funniest people. Great grub. Would love to go back someday

Im also indigenous, i dont have much in me but my grandfather is and he knows nothing about his culture! As a kid he was put in a residential school/hospital where he went through lots of trauma. Its sad after he suffered so much he doesnt even really know who he really is
I was and still am curious about what i dont know, i took a indigenous studies class in highschool and was dissapointed when i didnt learn much because the teacher was a white woman who didn't know much about it. I'm still curious to this day and am trying to learn more!
