First episode of Noughts and Crosses is promising. I read the books when I was a kid but barely remember them. The set / costume design is gorgeous. So far the core theme seems to be about how people should use their privilege to help change the status quo

I'm white and so I'd never attest to the black experience (or that of any other person of colour). But my sister is mixed race (her Dad is a black African) so growing up we definitely experienced the realities of being a mixed working class family in the UK

Last year we were stopped going into a music festival because the bouncer didn't believe we were related (I was chaperone). Literally had to explain that families don't have to look the same. After we got in we were like, "Was that racist? That was defo racist right?"

These are minor annoyances in the grand scheme of things, but definitely highlights that although many people like to think they are "beyond racism" or whatever, treating people differently based on the way they look still pervades UK society at every level, in small + large ways
