I've never played one. Is this a more laid back casual type of game? I played and loved Fantasy Life on 3DS, is it like that?

Yes, it's exactly like that. It's a laid back cozy game where you slowly build a village and make friends, explore. It has a very specific style and vibe that's hard to explain, unlike any other games - recommend watching trailer and seeing if it's for you
