Microsoft, Bungie, and other companies are letting employees work from home during the Corona Virus outbreak. My main take away? Most companies could allow remote work, but choose not to. Living in an expensive city with a commute shouldn’t be a barrier to most jobs in 2020.

Counter argument: remote jobs are bad for local economies and I shouldn't have to compete with every other potential candidate on the planet.

Counter point, if I’m the right person for a writing job, should I have to move to central London to do that same work, knowing my cost of living would skyrocket, when I can do the work totally well from here? Can we decentralise some money away from the capital city?

Ok but what if I can find a better writer from Johannesburg or Moscow? What's the diff?

If someone in Johannesburg or Moscow can do a remote job better than you: is better skilled and a better cultural fit for the team then yes, they should be hired instead of you You're not competing with THE WORLD, you're competing with other candidates who applied for the job

Arbitrarily limiting hiring pools for remote jobs to regions makes no sense. We hire the best people for the job. Limiting regionally results in worse, less diverse candidates - your hiring pool is "people who live here or can afford to relocate". This sucks
