The fact is was so successful being such a out of nowhere game is what makes it have the respect it does. It's easy to root for a game like Death Stranding because it has people of high caliber attached to it, but Goose Game was an underdog story and everyone loves one of those.
The award isn't "best underdog story", it's best game. I'd argue Outer Wilds has a much more interesting underdog story anyway - a student game that was so good they secured funding to work on it for 5+ years, and a fundamentally more interesting + important game (in my opinion)
But I understand why it won, yeah. People vote strategically, they vote for friends, they vote for who they "think should win" and I'm not outraged or anything. It's still a good game with wide appeal like you described and it's not unworthy of awards 
So true. I actually agree with your original post, but wanted to give some insight into why I thought people chose GG over arguably better games. It looks like you were already on the same page though =P
