This is a hot take and I'm totally willing to be convinced otherwise, but: If your game 100% relies on user-generated content and your UGC creators have no method to monetise, aren't you essentially profiting off the free labour of your creators? Feels extremely weird to me

I think their counter to this is that everything is open source. But also, they end up hiring their best creators anyway

So it's spec work, which we all universally hate? Haha I'm being facetious but yeah, idk, even if they hire some people from the community they're still making millions off the free work of others. Not the only game either obviously

Right, but even with paid mods in Roblox, perhaps 1% will actually make decent money out of it, better to be open source I say. Then it's like unity + itch + turbosquid in one neat little package. And you can still collect followers I guess?

I have to disagree here. 1) you can choose to make your Roblox game completely free 2) you can choose to make your game completely open source, up to you even small amounts of money help pay the bills or supplement other income. Paid UGC/mods enables some people to build careers
