- they don't talk about why they want this job at this company specifically in cover letter, too general - padding resumes with irrelevant extracurriculars I have to skip over - CV roles describe What They Did, not What They Achieved - sent in a doc format I cant open in browser

The best resumes are a story that describes a person's work experience and relevant education. Each listed job should have bullet points explaining what you achieved concretely (data helps) - "During my time as social media manager we grew the accounts by 300% YoY" etc

The best cover letters succinctly explain who you are, why you're good for this job AND why this job is good for you - it's a two way street. I'm disappointed at the number of candidates I interview who haven't done their research and haven't played our game :(

Final thing: portfolios rock! Nothing proves you can do a job better than a bunch of actual examples of similar work you already did (even student or volunteer stuff). This is harder for certain roles but art, design, programming, writing, even comms can have portfolios
