I'm gonna take the advice of the bodies that exist to make sure products are properly aimed at suitable audiences. As a father of two, knowing how impressionable they are, my own 'context' shouldn't be relied upon. In other words: parents, stop buying your kids the wrong games.
I don't think I'd be the person I am today without the ability to consume media above my age rating. Horror movies in the dark, mature themed games when I was a teenager, movies, TV, books etc. I obviously respect your parenting decisions and ESRB/PEGI exists for a reason

You can enjoy lots of dark, mature-themed entertainment without showing things that are very much for a certain maturity only. My kids can enjoy moral-orientated movies with sad outcomes, with implied violence, etc. They don't need to see the splatters.

My older cousins had Leisure Suit Larry when I was really young. It only affected me in the sense that I had to learn about current events to answer the "security" questions to start the game.
