When I was very young I made terrible flash games using ActionScript and played a ton of Neopets, Habbo, Runescape, GMOD and most of all BYOND - I would roleplay on SS13 every night after school. I think Roblox is the modern equivalent of that for a lot of young people

And there are skills beyond the obvious: project management, production, communication, negotiation, talking to people, finding bugs, solving problems, presenting, making videos, livestreaming - all of these are valid skills you can practice right now if you have time + internet

The games industry is microscopic and gargantuan. It can feel impossibly wide and yet so narrow that everyone knows everyone. The barriers to entry can seem insurmountable and yet once you're in, you're in. And it's our responsibility to try to make things better from the inside

I got very lucky and started at 19, and I'm 26 now. And 7 years is barely a drop in the bucket compared to many. I don't know where I'll be at 33, but I secretly hope it has air con, a selection of whisky, good internet, and a whole bunch of brilliant studio teammates
