My advice for anyone who wants to work in games / make games is the same as always: make stuff. If you have a computer, the internet and some free time, you can make stuff right now. Learn to draw, photoshop, 3D model, make music, write code, even tweet! Make Stuff!!

Roblox is a great tool for making games. Unity is free to download. GameMaker is great for 2D games. Twine is excellent for simple, narrative games. Lots of games support mods. Games like Mario Maker + Dreams are valid platforms for your creative content

"Learn to Code" is a horrible phrase weaponised by awful people, but there's some validity to it. If you have any interest, you can learn to script / program for the cost of time. But it's not just code - learn to "make stuff". Art, music, writing, design, it's all fair game

And there are skills beyond the obvious: project management, production, communication, negotiation, talking to people, finding bugs, solving problems, presenting, making videos, livestreaming - all of these are valid skills you can practice right now if you have time + internet

The games industry is microscopic and gargantuan. It can feel impossibly wide and yet so narrow that everyone knows everyone. The barriers to entry can seem insurmountable and yet once you're in, you're in. And it's our responsibility to try to make things better from the inside

I got very lucky and started at 19, and I'm 26 now. And 7 years is barely a drop in the bucket compared to many. I don't know where I'll be at 33, but I secretly hope it has air con, a selection of whisky, good internet, and a whole bunch of brilliant studio teammates
