I am a sensible man renting a place on his own for the first time. before I go ahead and do that, what kind of things do I need to do/know? I know I need to inform the council, do I need to get utilities sorted in advance? How do you make internet happen? Thanks

the house will have utilities already, you can review and change them if you want - might be a cheaper providers you need internet, you can call a provider and tell them the move in date now PLEASE get home contents insurance. I use first direct (my bank) its good + cheap

when you move in they'll usually do an inventory, but if not take a bunch of pictures on Day 1 especially of stuff that is broken. take them on phone and throw them on drive or whatever, these can be used to get your security deposit back if your landlord lies about damages

it's cold so figure out how the boiler / central heating + hot water works asap, hopefully it'll be simple. if you only have 1 set of keys danielle will need a set cut too. council tax needs to be paid but they'll send you a paper bill, you can setup direct debit from bank

other than that, enjoy bud! it's not as bad as you think, I started paying the bills for the first time in this new flat and it's barely extra effort. PLEASE get home insurance, I cannot stress enough - if there's a break-in/ flood / fire you get to claim everything lost back

OH - you can pay royal mail to redirect mail from old place to new place for a period of time, 3 months is probably enough but you can go 6 months for safety. just search Royal Mail Redirection. there's always one thing you forget to change address on
