Streaming service just don't give a damn about artistic intention. Only providing something that was drawn for 4:3 in zoomed in 16:9 is right up there with the adding 1.5x speed option Netflix wants to add.

I very much agree with your notion of artistic intention - streaming it the way it was intended to be experienced should definitely be the default. However, if different settings are optional, like the 1.5x speed, I don't see any harm done.

The way I think that should actually be handled is ask the director what they intended. The main one that comes to my mind is David Lynch. He is very specific in the way he times things to create mood and I think it would do him a disservice to watch one of his films that way.

There are also movies that I don't think would negatively be impacted by running at 1.5x speed. I'm not gonna name any names because I feel rude making the implication something might be less artistic than something else. I think it really depends on how much a given director

cares about pacing. However, overall I'm onboard with your viewpoint. I feel the same way about easy versions in video games. It doesn't effect my enjoyment so, if the developers are alright with including one, awesome. If not, not every piece of media is for everyone.

My position is quite a bit different - because what you are describing sounds like people shouldn‘t be allowed to create mods for games. Or that people shouldn‘t be allowed to put rims on their car that weren‘t approved by the cars designer beforehand.

I see those things as different I guess. To me, a car is just a straight up product like a home that you can customize however you want. Unless you buy a Frank Lloyd Wright home. I mean, you can do what you want to it but what is the point of spending the money on it if you're

going to change it, when you could(most likely) build your own custom home for less than destroying something like that. With games, player input is required for the game to be a game so(mods or no mods) the player is a active creator. If someone who made a game came out and

said "Modding this game on your first play through would ruin the experience I want to provide" I would respect that. Which is why I think they should need to get director approval before being allowed to institute the 1.5x if they do.

Screw the director. Not every piece of media is high art. Sometimes I want to blast through Bake-Off or a crappy comedy show at 2X speed, that's my decision - I already use a browser extension to make this possible
