exactly this. The bedroom coders of the 80s set an expectation that making a game in your spare time could make you rich. I've met plenty of teenagers who think they'll have a music career but I don't think it looks as intuitively plausible, cos guitars predate the music industry

Yeah, I'd say the expectation was also reinforced by the burst of solo indies in the mid 2000s too, and recent high profile successes (e.g Stardew). In a sense, most know it's incredibly unlikely, yet everyone still secretly thinks / hopes that their game will be the exception
