A common theme throughout every crunch horror story in gaming has been the unspoken but obvious threat that workers who don't volunteer themselves for crunch will be sacked. Nobody is falling for this

at a previous job if you left early, the CEO would 'joke' about you not being a "team player", being a "9-to-5'er". there was no formal punishment but the implication was if you didn't crunch you were worth less then the others + it breeded discontent between colleagues

so even though nobody was formally punished for not crunching you have a few knock-on effects: 1) people bullied into staying late 2) staff who crunch trained to bully staff who don't crunch 3) constant fear that you won't be promoted / valued by bosses because you don't crunch
