The best music does have story and characters, or at least makes you feel emotions as if you were thinking of your own. Experiences are great and can be profound, of course they can.
I didn't mean to imply that control = deep connection always. But in narrative-focused games "being" a character, physically moving around a space, framing the scene yourself using your "camera" / perspective, maybe picking objects up - this definitely immerses and connects you

I’ll politely disagree with that point. It’s the character immersing you, not the game play, if the story is compelling you enjoy that immersion, if you don’t, it becomes like any other well designed game.

You can't seperate gameplay from story any more than you can seperate cinematography or music. Good games use mechanics to reflect story/themes/character. Big difference between watching a character struggle and helping them struggle through.
