I understand your anger, you’re clearly passionate about games, I’m not so fussed. The Last of Us was a great game, I really enjoyed it, but to imply it’s anything other than an interactive copy of George A Romero’s best work is to be wilfully blind.

True, and I do apologise for the mocking tone, it was more meant as genuine surprise. Pen and paper is responsible for more people telling their own stories than building worlds on a pc, and would do more if fewer were distracted by instant domaine fixes like minecraft.

I get you. People who treat games seriously as hobbies and careers are often mocked. I actually somewhat agree that there are few games that tell linear stories as well as movies, but there are some that come close. Overall different goals though! No ill will bud

If more games told great stories I’d be more on board with the argument, naturally there are corner cases in both genres but the more emotionally charged, character driven STORIES. On any format, is a win for me.

Film and games aren’t an either-or choice though. I’m a film fan, and I’m a video games fan. I get different experiences from both. I’d argue the interactivity of the latter makes powerful games that much more powerful, but I’m a film lover too.

The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.

Which is why I like that you are engaging with the other side of your own opinion. Are you interested in exploring decent quality narrative video games more in order to actually experience what others are saying tho, rather than taking other people’s word for it / disagreeing?

Of course. I would look into thejapanese sounding Ps1 game many have mentioned if there hadn’t been so many rage tweets obscuring it in my notifications 😂 I tried dark souls and didn’t get the love. I will try god of war and some of the others people have mentioned lots

God of War is an interesting one. I don't think you'll think the actual story is better than any beloved movie, but perhaps try and frame it as a play experience where the setting and the mechanics work together with the dialogue and plot and music to create something richer

          Replying to @tactful @HJParkhill and

If you're taking recommendations: Firewatch, What Remains of Edith Finch, Her Story and 80 Days are all short(ish) narrative-focused games that present interesting stories that could easily be compelling movies or TV shows, but are made better by being games

Huge yes to all of these. Not sure what you are into movie-wise but the Batman games, Arkham Asylum especially works really hard to tell a cohesive story that’s framed like a movie plot. More comic-based in tone than the Nolan movies though.

It’s been mentioned a few times. I’ll try it! You don’t need to qualify it with anything, if it’s good it’s good!
